Trees for the Future

Nonprofit agroforestry organisation founded in 1989, training farming families in East Africa to restore degraded land through tree planting and diversified crops.

Trees for the Future (TREES) is a global agroforestry training organisation founded in 1989. It works with farming families to restore degraded land and improve household incomes through tree planting and diversified crop growing. The organisation employs more than 200 staff, with teams distributed across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and is recognised as a United Nations World Restoration Flagship.

Its signature programme, the Forest Garden Approach, provides hands-on training, tools and ongoing support to farming families, enabling them to plant thousands of trees and grow a range of crops on previously degraded land. The organisation has planted more than 400 million trees to date and has set a goal of 1 billion trees by 2030. Thousands of farming families have been served through the programme.

TREES operates across agroforestry, land restoration, carbon sequestration, biodiversity enhancement, sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation. Its delivery model is field-based, pairing environmental restoration with economic development for rural communities. Work spans the agriculture, environmental restoration, climate and rural development sectors, with an operating footprint centred on East Africa and historical roots in the Philippines.

The organisation is a mission-driven nonprofit. Careers are likely to suit people interested in practical, community-facing work in sustainable agriculture and land restoration within East African countries.
