Imagine Worldwide

Nonprofit edtech organisation delivering literacy and numeracy learning to children in Sub-Saharan Africa via solar-powered, offline tablets running the onebillion application, with government and community partners.

Imagine Worldwide is a nonprofit education-technology organisation founded in 2017 that delivers literacy and numeracy learning to children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its programme uses child-directed, tablet-based software running the onebillion application, delivered on solar-powered, offline hardware designed to be accessible and affordable in low-resource settings. The organisation is headquartered in California, with locally-registered entities in Malawi, Sierra Leone and Tanzania and pilot programmes in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia and Senegal.

The work spans several technical domains: education technology, offline-capable software, solar-powered hardware, tablet-based learning applications and impact evaluation through randomised controlled trials. The onebillion programme has been tested in nine RCTs, which reported dramatic learning gains, increased school attendance and gender parity, at a cost of less than $7 per child per year.

Imagine Worldwide operates in partnership with governments, organisations and communities, and its in-country entities point to a localised delivery model across the region. The organisation states that it was founded on the belief that every child deserves the basic right to literacy and numeracy, and it emphasises an evidence-based approach, equity, accessibility and affordability in its programmes.
