Founded in 1919, Save the Children International runs emergency response, education, health, child protection and advocacy programs for children in around 120 countries.
Save the Children International is a humanitarian and development organisation founded in London in 1919 by Eglantyne Jebb. It describes itself as the world's first and leading independent children's organisation, and works to ensure that every child survives, learns and is protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation. The organisation operates in around 120 countries and, over the past century, says it has transformed the lives of more than one billion children. Its founding location was London; it also has a presence in the United States and a global footprint spanning roughly 120 countries.
Its work is organised around five main areas. Emergency Response delivers aid to children when crisis strikes, with a commitment to be among the first to respond and the last to leave. Education Programs give children the opportunity to learn, and Health Programs aim to give them a healthy start in life. Child Protection programs work to shield children from abuse, neglect and exploitation, while Advocacy is carried out with communities, governments and partners to empower children and build resilient societies.
The organisation describes itself as a global movement with a mission-driven culture, holding that every child deserves a future and doing "whatever it takes" for children, both in daily work and in times of crisis. Collaboration with communities, governments and partners is central to how it operates.
